Founders & Supporters

The MaRS Centre for Impact Investing is honoured to recognize the following founders and supporters:

Hamilton Community Foundation

Hamilton Community FndnHamilton Community Foundation connects people’s philanthropic objectives with the community’s needs to help them make the difference they want to make. We do this in three ways: working with donors to build funds that meet their philanthropic and financial objectives; granting to the widest possible range of charitable organizations and initiatives, and fostering community leadership by bringing people, knowledge and resources together around the community’s needs and opportunities.

Since it was founded in 1954, HCF has made grants of some $70 million to the community. Constantly looking for ways to put more of our assets to work for our community, the HCF was a leader among Canadian community foundations in establishing a community investing fund in 2010. It continues to expand its various aspects of impact investing.

KPMGAt KPMG, we are passionate about strengthening our relationships with our communities. With offices in 33 locations across the country, the firm’s more than 675 partners and 5,000 employees provide crucial services to many public and private business, not-for-profit and public-sector organizations in Canada.

We recognize that our opportunity to have a positive impact extends beyond our client work. As part of our role at KPMG, we are active citizens, committed to sustainability and to driving social innovation. By leveraging our experience we can effect social change. This is at the core of our business strategy and drives what we do every day.

Following a venture philanthropy approach, we seek to understand the priority social and environmental needs of our communities, and then help build the capacity of non-profits working to address these challenges. This includes working with social entrepreneurs and social enterprises to support innovative solutions that drive social change, and ultimately, transform our communities.

The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation

JW McConnellEstablished in 1937 by John Wilson McConnell (1877-1963), The McConnell Foundation grew out of Mr. McConnell’s deep commitment to the public good and his lifelong involvement with charitable work in Canada.

Renamed The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation following his death, the core purpose of the foundation has remained constant since its founding: to improve the quality of life in Canada by building communities that help people develop their potential and contribute to the common good. Over the years, the approach to this work has evolved. For the past two decades the foundation has maintained a national focus, and many of its programs operate country-wide.

The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation remains a private family foundation: the board of trustees comprises family members who set policy and assure the foundation’s good governance. The foundation has a small staff based in Montreal.
